We safe and decent homes for families to build new lives, hopes and opportunities

Story

As the clock strikes midnight on the final night of June,

Four planners, and Vanessa, shall flee the CBRE summer ball,

(And in the case of Rebecca, the arms of Mark Owen and Take-That),

To embark on the "Hope" Challenge of building their own their own cacoon,

And hiking for three days, two nights and through ascents of 1000 m tall.

Under the expertise of former boy scout Dickie Citrus,

Flat-pack-expertise of Lishan and dramatic gestures of fergie,

We seek to fundraise to put roofs above the homeless,

So please dig deep, whilst we spend a weekend with our knees dirty.

Without the poetry, from the 1st - 3rd July 2011, Yellow Submarine (Lishan Tham, Rachel Ferguson, Rebecca Maxwell, Richard Lemon, Tom Pike and Vanessa Buchan) will undertake the Hope Challenge. We will hike across the Peak District, lifting our hands from the keyboards and turn them towards, constructing a shelter, for two, preferably mild, nights. Through your sponsorship we hope to raise over £2,500.

The cause? Habitat for Humanity

The world is experiencing a global housing crisis: ~1.6 billion people live in substandard housing and 100 million are homeless, according to the United Nations. Habitat for Humanity work to break the cycle of poverty housing through supporting local communities in over 90 countries to help them design creative, scalable buildings to suit their needs both in the UK and abroad. Habitat for Humanity aim through housing to transform individual lives, local economics and community development working in areas of disaster relief and among vulnerable groups. Through the creation of low cost micro finance solutions, local communities stay involved and secure their own place in community as active participants rather than passive receipts of aid.

Since 1976 Habitat for Humanity have helped over 2 million people escape poverty housing and homelessness. To continue support is needed. So please donate, for Habitat for Humanity and to avoid further renditions of Yellow Submarine in the Toucano (please see the video for our 'namesake'). Alternatively come along to our bake sale in the C-Bar on Monday 20th June.

As an added incentive, should we reach £1,250 by 30th June your sponsorship will be matched by CBRE. Even better, Mr Lemon has promised to sport a “gown” from the preceding night’s ball if we hit £1,500 by the end of June. If we reach £2,500 Pikey could be convinced to join (?).

About the charity

We believe decent homes are the heartbeat of strong communities and so we also fight for land rights for women, upgrade urban slums and informal settlements, improve access to water and sanitation, and help communities become more resilient in the face of natural disasters.
