To celebrate World Environment Day we are inviting Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service employees to show their support by Wearing Green to Work on Thursday 5th June and pledging just £2 (this is the minimum donation on justgiving.com) to the environmental charity Cool Earth. We appreciate that our uniform staff can’t wear green (although the colour of your underwear is entirely your choice)! But we are asking that if you feel strongly enough about World Environment Day and the commitment to a low carbon economy that even if you can’t wear green you can still pledge £2. Cool Earth is a charity that protects endangered rainforest. This combats global warming, protects ecosystems and provides sustainable jobs for local people. For as little as £70 Cool Earth can protect a whole acre of rainforest. By raising £350 we can save five acres of rainforest. The charity puts donations put it in a local trust, and help protect it around the clock to keep the carbon where it belongs. They also employ local people to do the work, helping them to get income from the forest without cutting it down and make sure the rainforest is worth more standing. Thank you for donating. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to donate as Cool Earth Action gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please donate now! About Sustainability Week - 2nd to 6th June Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is committed to providing services in a sustainable manner. To give our support to a sustainable future and to celebrate World Environment Day (5th June) we have organised a week of awareness raising, activities and competitions for everyone. Monday - Visit the intranet to find what’s happening during the week and how you can get involved plus: - Top tips on energy (and money) saving for home and work - Calculate your carbon footprint - Watch video clips - Take a sustainability quiz
Tuesday - We are asking everyone to think about how they travel to work. Anyone who travels to work on foot, using public transport, cycles or car shares on the 3rd June will receive a free energy saving light bulb (you must register on the intranet prior to the day). Wednesday - On average every worker uses 50 sheets of paper a day*. Based on this figure and taking just our office based staff this averages around 20,000 sheets of paper a day. Even though all our paper is 100% recycled the energy used to print has an impact on the environment. Do you need to print as much? We are asking you to try not to print on 4th June. Think Before You Print. * Source: Friends of the Earth Thursday – World Environment Day - To celebrate World Environment Day we are inviting everyone to show their support towards a low carbon economy by Wearing Green to Work and pledging £1 to environmental charity Cool Earth. We appreciate that our uniform staff can’t wear green (although the colour of your underwear is entirely your choice)! But we are asking that if you feel strongly enough about World Environment Day and the commitment to a low carbon economy that even if you can’t wear green you can still pledge £1. Register your intention to support Wear Green to Work Day on the intranet. We will also be launching a children’s eco-poster design competition on our website. The competition is themed around the important messages of ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’. There are two age categories under 11 years and 11-15 years. A winner from each category will receive a bike and safety helmet. Friday - We will round off the week by asking you to fill in our sustainability survey on the intranet. Sustainability week is about raising awareness of our individual impact on the environment but we also need to know how we are performing as an organisation in our commitment to sustainability. To do this we need to find out where we are now so we can plan what we need to do. Please take a couple of minutes to complete the survey. Please show your support by getting involved. Further details are available on the intranet from 2nd June.
