Bransby Horses is deeply concerned about the escalating welfare problems experienced by feral ponies on common land in South Wales. The winter has taken its toll on the hundreds of animals living in the area and the situation has deteriorated recently as another spell of freezing weather prevents spring grass from coming through.
Staff from Bransby Horses’ Herefordshire site routinely monitor several commons in South Wales and have been very active recently in providing forage to feral herds when needed and bringing suffering individuals into care when necessary. As Philip York, Bransby’s Head of Equine Operations explains “We are aware of the situation on various commons across South Wales. The Charity has been providing hay to the ponies on Cefn Golau and other areas for the last 2 months and has taken into its care numerous ponies following veterinary advice. We are committed to doing everything that we can to help alleviate the suffering of these animals and intend to remain active across all areas of common land where ponies are suffering.”
The Charity’s does not take feral animals into its care unless rescue is the only way of securing their survival and future welfare. Ideally we would like the welsh hill ponies to benefit from the natural lifestyle the welsh commons provide whilst receiving routine care such as worming, or veterinary treatment to maintain their health and wellbeing.
With thousands of feral animals living across common land in South Wales, the scale of the current problem is daunting. Bransby Horses is working with local communities, local authorities and other welfare charities to try and find solutions to the root causes of a distressing situation and help to both relieve current suffering and prevent such serious problems arising again in the future.
If you would like to help the feral ponies in South Wales, please support organisations like Bransby Horses who have in depth local knowledge, understanding of welfare laws and experience in assisting what are effectively wild animals in a very challenging environment.
