What are we doing to raise money? Walking!
The National Samaritans Walk was held in Inverness on Saturday 13th June, and we walked 17 miles, in the rain and mist.
Who are we raising money for? Tunbridge Wells & District Samaritans, our local branch, and an independent charity, established in 1967 (the national charity was established over 50 years ago). It covers an area of Kent and East Sussex stretching from Sevenoaks to Burwash and from East Grinstead to Cranbrook.
Why? Samaritans works to enable persons who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those who may be at risk of suicide, to receive confidential emotional support at any time of the day or night from appropriately trained Samaritans in order to improve their emotional health and to reduce the incidence of suicide.
Samaritans also works to promote a better understanding in society of suicide, suicidal behaviour and the value of expressing feelings which may otherwise lead to suicide or impaired emotional health.
(In 2006 in the UK, 3172 people were killed on the roads but the total for suicides and undetermined deaths was 5576)
In the year to 31st March 2009 our local branch was contacted over 48000 times by telephone, email, in person and text. That's 11 every 2 hours, every day of the year. They rely on 135 volunteers to provide this service and have no paid staff, but it still costs about £70 per day to maintain.
