A CELEBRATION OF SHACKLETON'S EPIC JOURNEY TO THE SOUTH POLE IN THE CENTENARY YEAR
Well here I go again - this time my adventure takes me to the "bottom" of the world, swapping polar bears for penguins!
In 1909, Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton mounted the first significant attempt to walk to the South Pole and with victory 112 miles away he made the decision to turn back. The journey will start on the 10th December and we will trek Shackleton's "Unfinished Journey" from the point where he turned back, aiming to reach the South Pole on 3 January 2010. You can think of me on Christmas Day sitting in the snow and ice!!
If you have been watching Ben Fogle and James Cracknell's attempt to reach the South Pole currently on BBC2, you will know what I'm in for. In a team of 5 I will once again live under canvas, travel on skis and tow a sledge of supplies. With the wind a remorseless chill factor of minus 50, I will traverse vast ice fields and enormous glaciers reaching the plateau at 10,000 feet where we will begin the final part of our journey.
I'm back in training and, once again, can be found pulling tyres around the Meadows, with the added fun addition of also pulling the tyre up the Pentland Hills......
