The Running Continues...

December 2008

This page closes on December 28th so please get you last minute donation sin asap. I will appreciate the donation as if it were a big xmas gift.

My running continues, please visit www.surreyrunning.com to see what the NEW University of SUrrey Running Club has been up to.

October 2008

Since getting back from Berlin I have continued to run. Most recently I ran the Great South Run (10 miles) in 1hr17. A big congratulations to Judy Lowe who also ran in Portsmouth. Her justgiving page can be found at http://www.justgiving.com/judysgreatsouthrun/

I was also thrilled to receive confirmation of my place in the London Marathon next April. This came as a bit of a shock, I'd already booked a place in the Paris Marathon earlier in April as I didn't think I'd get into London. I'll also give the triathlon a go in May (well..a super sprint, the easiest tri there is!)

My distance running continues but my charity fundraising draws to a close soon. This page shuts down on December 28th so please donate before Xmas while you still can. I've already reached my target but lets see how much we can raise together for Macmillan

Mission Accomplished

Sunday 28 September 2008 was an awesome day! Perfect weather conditions, a new world record and over 40,000 runners took part in the 35th real,-Berlin Marathon. Over a million supporters were there and certainly did themselves proud as they shouted and cheered their hearts out.

I completed the course in a new personal best time of 03:53:21, which was a minute faster than my time in Barcelona. Haile Gebrselassie, the greatest distance runner in history, broke the world record in the same race with and amazing time of 02:03:59. A youtube video can be found on the left of this page.

After the 30km the running gets tougher and tougher and you need to have a strong motivation to keep going. It was easy to keep my motivation knowing that you were all willing me on. I frequently imagined you all cheering me across the finishing line.

A magnificent 118 (what are the chances!) Team Macmillan runners took part in the race, the biggest UK Charity Team in Berlin! By donating to Macmillan you are enabling Macmillan Cancer Support to help the thousands of people living with cancer in the UK today, this money really will change so many people's lives.

'Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. Macmillan provide practical, medical, emotional and financial support and push for better cancer care. Cancer affects us all. We can all help.'

...The Long Road To Berlin

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page where you can look back on all of my running over the last year.

To remind you of my target... This year I ran over 200km in competitive races in aid of MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT. If you would prefer to donate to Cancer Research UK please visit http://www.justgiving.com/williamsloseley/. I started by completing the Chichester Priory 10k last October and the last 42km was the Berlin Marathon. I ran 3 marathons in total. Here are the runs that made up the 200+ km (bold = complete)

Chichester 10k
Brighton 10k
Hogs Back 13k
Bookham 10k

Barcelona 42k
IOW 42k
Torbay 21k
British 10k
Great Capital 10k
Chichester
25k
IOW 21k

Ashtead 10k
New Forest 21k
Berlin 6k
Berlin 42k
Total 293/293k

I have also completed the 3 Peaks Challenge (see June News Item)

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Macmillan Cancer Support will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. NONE of the money you donate will be spent on registration for the events or transport to get there.

THANK YOU for your support in MARATO BARCELONA. I completed the course in 3hr54 and was quite emotional crossing the line. I am thrilled to have run less than 4hrs on my marathon debut and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Pictures and videos will be added once I've received them, be sure to check back soon.  Please now get behind the cause and donate what you can to MACMILLAN.

Photos have now been added to flickr and you should see links on the left of this page. The youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6kH60iOV48 shows various stages of the Barcelona Marathon and although I do not feature in the video it ends with Ben crossing the finishing line. A video of me crossing the finishing line should be available soon. Thought it'd be good banter to take to the lead in the Bookham 10k and you can see me on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyrkdJBrr8o

May 2008

I am now OVER HALF WAY to completing the 200km target after having completed the Isle of Wight Marathon. With the heat in the mid/high 20's and with over 1500ft of ascent, I am not going to lie to you, it was agony. I was well and truly beat after 20 miles but with some words of encouragement from the marshals I endeavoured to cross the finishing line.
Only 100ish runners finished this year and the results can be found at www.rydeharriers.co.uk

Now that I have completed over half the distance with your help I would like to have soon raised well over half of the fundraising target. Please give whatever you can.

June 2008

The highest 3 PEAKS in the UK were unable to defeat USSU as we reached the summits of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in under 36hrs. Photos have now been added to Flickr of the challenge and links should be found on the left of this page.

The challenge started with the long drive to Fort William (thank you to the mini bus drivers who worked tirelessly all bank holiday) from where we scaled the 1350m of BEN NEVIS. Next we travelled to the lake district and started our ascent of SCAFELL PIKE at 06:30. We reached the 980m summit  within 2.5hrs in windy conditions. The wind got even stronger in Wales where we managed to climb 1000m of the 1085m SNOWDON. Having taken the Miner's Track and reached the final ridge, the 100mph gusts of wind meant that leaving the summit for another day was the only sensible option. I was really proud of the group with which I completed the adventue. Their positivity and motivation to reach the summits made the challenge all the more rewarding.

No distance covered during the 3 peaks makes up any part of the 200km, it was simply an additional challenge that I hope encourages you to donate. The eventg was organised by the Evolution Team  part of USSU and money was raised for the two official charities the Alzheimer's Society and Mountain Rescue. I have raised £100 for these charities seperate to the funds raised on this page. You may now choose to donate to Macmillan using this page or get in contact with me to arrange a donation to be split between the alternative two charities.

Four generations of my family cheered me over the finish line at the end of the Torbay Half Marathon. After completing two quick laps of Paignton Green we twice made our way across to the Torquay Pavillion and then back again. The shallow ascents/descents between Paignton and Torquay seemed to get steeper each time we went up but the bands at the roadside helped keep spirits high. I completed the course in just under 1hr53min. All race results can be found at http://www.sportsystems.net/torbay/Downloads/ResultsTorbayHalfM08All.pdf

Thank you to my small fan club at the finishing line, it made it so much more enjoyable having you there :-)

July 2008

The Asics British 10k was a very British affair. With the National Anthem, Jerusalem and Rule Britannia ringing in all the 27,000 runners ears we ran a course from Hyde Park corner to Tower Bridge, back to Westminster and finishing at the Cenotaph.

The Great Capital Run was a 10k road race around Hyde Park. I completed the course in a time of 00:45:54, not quite managing to reach my personal best of 00:43:46 set in Brighton last November. Maybe next time :-)

August 2008

Over 200km completed, hoorah!!!!
Today I returned to the Isle of Wight, the setting for the agonising marathon back in May, this time to cover just half the distance of before. Thanks go out to Nathan Jones whom accompanied me on the run and registered a time of 1hr44 which is especially brilliant as it was the farthest he had ever run. I lagged behind finishing ten minutes later with my lesson learned (I need to do lots more training ready for Berlin).

September 2008

September is the last month of the twelve and a last opportunity to get fit for Berlin. Today I ran the New Forest Half Marathon in a personal best time of 1hr49 at a comfortable pace and I'm hoping to translate that to another sub 4hr time next Sunday. I fly to Berlin on Wednesday so this is a great time to send messages of support. Such messages have inspired me all year to meet the tough challenge over the last 12 months.

Mission Accomplished

My mission is finally accomplished. I completed the Berlin Marathon in a new personal best time of 3hr53 beating my time from Barcelona by just 1 minute. Thank you so much for your best wishes throughout the year. I am touched by the support and genorosity of my friends and family, I really hope that I have done you all proud. Photos have been added to Flickr and can be found on the left hand side of this page.

A special thanks goes to Ryan Cottington whom acoompanied me in Berlin, among many other races over the year, and also completed the 200km challenge we set ourselves this time last year.

Many thanks for your continued support.
