Story
In March 2015, a team of sixteen Wykehamists will travel to Mussoorie in India to assist with the construction of a Himalayan village school.
Mussoorie, situated in the foothills of the Himalaya’s, is one of the old British Hill Stations. It is a popular destination for both Indian and foreign tourists. Despite this, the local population has been registered as both financially and educationally disadvantaged and the children are at great risk of missing out on a good education.
There is an existing school with sixty pupils and two teachers. It is run from two small rented premises but the owner is foreclosing and therefore there will be no school available for these children. There are few other schools in the area and their educational standards are poor.
The Lotus Flower Trust has been approached by the Vice Chairman of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, to support his Trustees and the local villagers to build a new school for two hundred pupils. The school will cost £43,000 to build on land that has been donated for the cause.
John Hunt, the CEO of the Lotus Flower Trust, has visited the current school and was impressed by the children and the staff. He is confident that we will have a very good cultural exchange with the pupils and the villagers of this remote mountainous area and that building this school would certainly change lives.
