Story
On 8th June, I'm taking part in the Colour 5K (people lob coloured powder at you each 1000m) for Headway Essex.
Ten years ago, I spent some time in Madagascar; working on conservation and sustainable livelihood projects. Unbeknownst to me, I bought some little people home with me - tapeworm larvae - nestling happily in various muscles, and my brain. A year later, my superhero immune system killed them all off, leading to massive swelling and a period of not being very well at all.
I had first hand experience of what can happen when one experiences brain injury; seizures, headaches (oh heavens, the headaches!) debilitating confusion (what's real? who am I?), uncontrollable emotions, inappropriate outbursts ('I wore my best bra for you doctor!' (yes really, it was the worms speaking)), major anxiety attacks, unable to make simple decisions and several years of recovery.
Headway Essex helps people through such trauma and into recovery. They also help people adapt to, what is for many, a transformed life. Brain injury is traumatic for the individual and for those around them. Headway Essex is there to help; ensuring no one need cope alone.
This is my pre-birthday treat. Don't bring a bottle to my party (not that you would, being as it's at a pub, but you get the idea) sponsor me instead! :)
Donating through JustGiving is simple and secure. JustGiving will never sell your details on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to Headway Essex.
