It’s hard to believe that every 20 seconds a child dies from water borne diseases. That’s 4,000 every day.

In fact, more children under the age of five die from water pollution - or a lack of access to fresh water - than anything else in the world. This is because their immune systems are not sufficiently developed, making them vulnerable to diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera and bilharzia. 

Moved by this plight, Just a Drop was launched in 1998 as an international water aid charity. Fiona Jeffery, the charity’s founder, learnt that just £1 can deliver clean water to a child for up to 10 years. She named the charity ‘Just a Drop’ based on the premise that if people can be encouraged to give a little, then collectively, we can make a huge difference.

Just a Drop’s mission is to contribute positively to the reduction of child mortality caused by poor sanitation and unsafe water and to actively reduce the numbers of people without access to clean water.

Our approach is to develop strategic partnerships with local partners and communities at a grass roots level, in order to provide a local, clean water supply through appropriate engineering solutions. We support the construction of wells, boreholes, pipelines, hand pumps and latrines and strive to encourage the establishment of WASH (Water and Sanitation Hygiene) programmes alongside our work. Projects are carried out by experienced Project Engineers, some of whom are former British Army Officers skilled at managing the technical, cultural and budgetary challenges of operating in developing countries.

 

Just a Drop is a charity with a wide global reach. To date, our projects have reached an estimated 1.5 million people in 31 countries from Afghanistan to Zambia, transforming the lives of some of the poorest communities in some of most remote regions in the world.
