All through the Autumn we are going to be learning how to sing Handel's Messiah with a crowd of other people. LIke us, some of them can sing, some of them can't. In December we're going to be performing it live in London with all proceeds going towards the world's first ever Street Child World Cup which takes place in March.
This groundbreaking event in Durban, just ahead of the actual soccer World Cup, will bring together teams of young people who live on the streets in some of the world's biggest cities - along with their support workers. As well as the football, travel and specialist art and education programmes they will take part in, the event will harness the world's media in World Cup year to throw a spotlight on the plight of street children. Without their parents. Victims of crime. Living rough, begging for scraps. Vulnerable to drugs and violence and abuse. It's time politicians and policy makers did more to give these children a chance to get off the streets - to be reconciled to their families or find new families, to get into education, training or employment. To make a new start in life.
