Each week at least twelve young people in the UK die suddenly as a result of undiagnosed heart conditions. At Cardiac Risk In the Young we aim to save young lives & to help those affected by young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). We do this by providing support, information & screening those affected.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On the 20 May challenge 4 of the Year of Madness will get underway........

Challenge 4 is the Manchester 10k, which we are running for Cardiac Risk in the Young and in memory of a very special person, Matt Wallbank.

Matt sadly passed away on the 24th May 2008 whilst in London with Eddie for our friend Jon’s wedding. The cause of his death was unknown, all we knew was that he passed away during the night in his sleep.

His sister Becky then contacted CRY and reasons as to why this could have happened finally materialised. It turned out the cause of his death was Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, a bit like the adult version of cot death.

Over the few months after his death his family and many of his friends pulled together to raise over £6,500 for CRY in his memory and we have raised over £8000 to date.

Knowing he would not be happy to be forgotten in the Year of Madness we have included CRY as one of the charities and dedicated this challenge to Matt. Partly as the race is the same week as the 4th anniversary of Matt's death.

The team pounding the streets of Manchester for CRY are:

Eddie Whittle
John McDonough
Becky Wallbank
Chris Ellison
Craig Montague
Yvonne Quinn
Tony Melia
Rachel Tuson
Michael Sharp
Lorna Sharp
Sharon Normington
Haydn Sibley
Caroline Sibley

Losing a best friend in this way was something I would not want anyone to have to go through, but seeing parents and a sister lose a son and brother, especially so young is what drives us to help CRY push for compulsory screening in Schools for heart defects and help stop others having to suffer the terrible effects of sudden adult death syndrome.

The Manchester 10k is part of the Year of Madness which will see Eddie and John complete 12 challenges in 12 months all in aid of CRY, Macmillan Cancer Support, Action Medical Research and the British Heart Foundation.

For more info on the Year of Madness, please visit:

http://www.madness4charity.co.uk/

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
