Somerville is a college for women and men. Founded in 1879 to provide an opportunity for women, who at that date were excluded from membership of the University, to enter higher education in Oxford. Somerville has an excellent record of facilitating the development of bright young people and supporting the research activities of world class academics.

Story

On Saturday 13 June 2009 a group of Michala Butterfield's friends will climb the 3 Peaks in Yorkshire, a 25 mile walk and a real challenge, to support the Michala Butterfield (nee Emmett) appeal.  The aim is to endow either a scholarship or bursary in Michala's name, in perpetuity, at Somerville College, Oxford University.  This would be for a talented female law student who would otherwise find it difficult, if not impossible, to take up their place at the college without financial support.

In January 2008 Michala and her new husband Sam were tragically killed in a car accident while still on their honeymoon.  She was just 30 years old and is greatly missed by her friends, family and all who knew her.

Michala read law at Somerville (1995 - 1998) and the time she spent there was precious to her, both academically and personally.  We believe that Michala would have welcomed this initiative to support students at the college she so loved.
