Rape in Congo : Facts

-A woman or girl is raped every 8 minutes in the DRC

-More than 200,000 women have been raped since the beginning of the conflict

-UNFPA (The United Nations Population Fund) the agency coordinating work on sexual violence in Congo, reported that 15,996 new cases of sexual violence were registered in 2008 throughout the country

-Rebel movements, foreign fighters, and local militias – including some of those responsible for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda – fight to control Congo’s vast natural resources and prey upon civilians

-Many tens of thousands of women and girls have been systematically kidnapped, raped, mutilated and tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army

-Much of the violence is unspeakably brutal. Many sexual violence survivors have received debilitating damage to their reproductive organs, resulting in multiple fistulas and incontinence

-Women and girls have been left with broken bones, missing limbs and burned flesh. Some have been shot and stabbed in the vagina with rifles, shards of glass and other objects.

-Family men have been forced at gun point to sexually violate their own daughters, sisters and mothers

-Women and girls throughout the DRC are susceptible to sexual violence during the course of their daily routines, such as fetching wood or water, or because poverty has forced them into selling sex as a means of survival

-Recent analysis suggests that armed groups will continue targeting civilian populations in 2010. As a result, internal displacement will continue in the eastern provinces and human rights violations, including sexual violence, might even increase in some areas...
