Yvonne Brown (GBR) was a worthy winner of the women’s race in 4:26:10, finishing ahead of two previous North Pole Marathon winners, Emer Dooley (IRL) and Alison Hamlett (GBR). The first three finishers broke the previous female record.
Very unexpectedly, I came in first female smashing the current womens record, but additionally came in second overall. It was minus 20 degrees on the race day (wind chill factored in). I remain determined to reach my goal of £10,000 to make this all worthwhile. Please help me by sending this link to others, and encouraging others to donate. The Antarctic Ice Marathon is the only marathon run in the interior of the Antarctic, 80 degrees South and close to the South Pole, at the foot of the Ellsworth Mountains. It is the southernmost marathon on Earth. I will face an average wind-chill temperature of between minus 20C and minus 35C. The strong Katabatic Winds can blow from the icy heart of the pole at over 30 miles an hour. The marathon takes place at an altitude of 3,000 feet, over half a mile above sea level!
Low temperatures, combined with icy winds and the underfoot conditions of snow and ice makes it a very difficult challenge. It's too cold for even penguins so there will be no bystanders to cheer me on – and so I ask for your support.
I am undertaking this epic challenge to raise desperately needed funds for Emma Hoolin, Sadie Rose Clifford and Robyn Higgins. Emma, Sadie Rose and Robyn are all fighting an aggressive childhood cancer called neuroblastoma. It is the most common cancer diagnosed in the first year of life and accounts for around 15% of cancer deaths in children. Having lost my own son Jack at 7 years old, to this awful disease, I would do anything to help other children get the best chance at life. This is why I take on the challenge. It will call on every ounce of determination I have.
Every penny I raise from the Antarctic Ice Marathon will go towards the costs of potentially life-saving treatment in America for these three little girls. The specialised therapy they need isn’t available in the UK, and can cost up to £250,000 per child. These children have no options left in the UK.
