We help improve Cardiac Care to support people with heart conditions

Story

I have now decided to dedicate this dive to my dear mother who passed away on Sunday 15th January 2012  and my good friend Derek Gardner who passed away suddenly on the 20th January 2012.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am scared of heights , so what better way to deal with this than jumping out of a plane,13,000 ft (2 1/2 miles up!)  followed by 45 seconds of free fall before the parachute opens at 6,000ft so I can enjoy the "leisurely" ride back down to earth under the canopy. Oh! and by the way I will have a Red Devil strapped to my back! . On the 22 May 2012 at Netheravon Airfield, Salisbury, Wiltshire,I am challenging my fear of heights and by doing so hope to raise lots of money for a fantastic charity. There are some of you who may wish to sponsor the parachute company in the hope they use inferior twine . Either way I and of course Wessex Heartbeat are grateful for your fantastic support. Thank you so much.

Wessex Heartbeat

Wessex Heartbeat is dedicated to ensuring that everyone living with a heart condition receives the best possible care and support.  We help the people treated at the Wessex Cardiac Centre at Southampton General Hospital and their loved ones.  We make a real difference to the care of the 20,000 patients treated at the Centre annually, including 1,000 babies and children born with heart defects.  Along with funding specialist equipment and patient services, Wessex Heartbeat runs Heartbeat House for cardiac patients’ relatives and the Heartbeat Education Centre, which facilitates the training of medical staff and the work of the Cardiac Centre’s medical team.

Young Adult Cardiac Unit (YACU) Appeal

Wessex Heartbeat’s next major project is to fund a ward suited to the needs of young adults aged 16-30 with heart problems.

Thanks to advances in cardiac medicine and surgery, babies born with heart defects are surviving into adulthood and living longer than ever before.  This means there are many more young adults who need ongoing treatment and surgery.  These patients often find themselves in a ward with very elderly people with heart problems quite different to their own.

As young adults, they need a place suited to their needs. A place with people who understand what they’re going through. A place where they can do things they normally would.  A place where they can make friends.

This Wessex Heartbeat appeal will provide them with the best possible surroundings and facilities for their physical and emotional wellbeing.  So they can get on with being themselves, whilst receiving excellent medical care.
