Clapham Common 5km run · 18 October 2015

Motivated by the strength and unfaltering sense of humour of our youngest daughter Poppy, we as a family are committed to support The Lily Foundation and help find a cure for Mitochondrial Disease.

Story

Lily's little sister, Poppy, is 4 and suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Mitochondrial Disease.

To show support for Poppy, Lily and her classmates at Hornsby House School (plus a few willing siblings) will be running 5km on Sunday 18th October to raise money for The Lily Foundation, a charity which is committed to helping find a cure for Mitochondrial Disease.

Good luck to everyone taking part...Lily, Claudia, Lizzie, Christopher, Archie, Freddie, Mason, Lola, Maggie, Mabel, Arlo, Dax, Brooke, Milo, Finn, Lara, Luke & Isabella.

Mitochondrial Disease is a hugely complex disorder which impacts each and every person differently and can affect almost any part of the body from the muscles to the brain and other vital organs, depending on where the dysfunctional mitochondria (the element of a cell that produces energy) are located. Simply put, it means the batteries that power the body just aren't quite strong enough. Little is really known about this disease and there are currently no treatments and no cure.

The Lily Foundation is a fantastic charity, which was founded 8 years ago by the parents of a little girl who lost her battle with this horrible condition at only 8 months old. The Lily Foundation has a three point mission:

1) To fund research to improve diagnosis and treatment options

2) To raise awareness of these conditions so they are more easily recognised

3) To support families with sick children.

You can read more about Mitochondrial Disease and the work that the Lily Foundation do at www.thelilyfoundation.org.uk. They have also produced this video which helps to explain the condition in simpler terms and help to create more awareness of it: http://vimeo.com/62446736
