Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working with communities, partner organisations and governments, we develop literacy skills, a habit of reading, and support girls to complete school.

Story

ARRIVED 8TH SEPTEMBER 1100KM LATER IN THE POURING RAIN! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTED US. PLEASE KEEP THE MONEY ROLLING IN SURE WE CAN SPONSOR A FEW MORE GIRLS THROUGH EDUCATION.
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT
MIKE AND CHRIS

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Room To Read will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
To add a little extra incentive to the event we are giving away a fantastic seven-day, two-centre holiday for two at the Kasbah du Toubkal and Riad Farnatchi. For every £50 donated you will get the chance to guess:
a) how many days it will take Mike and Chris to get to the Eagles' Nest?
b) what will the total cumulative ride time be for the journey hours and minutes? See http://www.kasbahdutoubkal.com/charity/b2b/2b2.htm Donate your money and email mike@discover.ltd.uk with your guesses/estimates Summary WE HAVE MADE IT . IT WAS MORE THAN 1100kms 2 BIKES, 2 BROTHERS, 1,000 KILOMETRES CALAIS TO EAGLES NEST CEVENNES SPONSORING GIRLS THROUGH EDUCATION THROUGH ROOM TO READ As far as value for money John Wood's Room to Read charity is hard to beat your £ really does go along way and has long term benefits. It would be great if collectively many more girls could be sponsored and receive an education, £1,400 educates a girl for 10 years. We hope our Bike ride will be a catalyst for friends, colleagues and others to donate for this worthy cause. Your generous donations really can make a difference to the life of children, it will also help motivate us when the going gets tough! http://www.roomtoread.org/girls_scholarship_2003/index.html Many thanks for your support. Mike & Chris More info: After my trip to Morocco last year I decided I needed something more comfortable and faster!! - well on the flat and down hill if not up! The trip Calais to the Eagles Nest seemed an obvious choice. Chris decided to join me but hankering after Che Guevara he decided to do it on "La Poderosa" - The Powerful One! My daughters call mine The Embarrassing One - not sure if it's the trike, me or both! The idea gathered some momentum when Chris had a hour to kill in Nimes bored he entered a motorbike shop with Harleys, Kawasaki and the like outside... having looked at his licence "La Poderosa" had metamphorphisied from a 500cc Norton into 50cc MBK moped!! Ever the optimist, I have not put a target (do not want to restrict ourselves) but hope that several more girls will be able to get an education thanks to your collective support. "I was fortunate enough to meet John Wood by chance when he visited our Kasbah in Morocco. Anyone who looks at what his organisation has achieved and in such a short time cannot fail to be impressed. When I looked at the website and in particular the section on scholarships, the arguments for sponsoring a girl were compelling. When I saw how a donation could really change the life of a girl who has never had the opportunities we take (almost) for granted in our society it really made me think. To be honest I feel that many who visit the website http://www.roomtoread.org/girls_scholarship_2003/index.html will find it so compelling that they will want to sponsor a child. We may not individually be able to change the world but Room to Read shows us how we can make a huge change to a person's life and indirectly many more." Thank you . Mike and Chris McHugo
