Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

The Team consists of 10 people; Robyn Armstrong, Lydia Watt, Amber Stewart, Hannah Selvey, Harry Lusty along with; Kevan and Rachel Armstrong, Candy Evans, Clare Cooper, and Mark Gray. Our aim is to complete the 3 Peaks challenge on the 29th-30th June. The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks, respectively, in England, Wales and Scotland, within 24 hours, one of which will be in the middle of the night! The Peaks are:

  • Snowdon in Wales (1085m)
  • Scafell Pike, in England (978m)
  • Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1344m)

The charity which we are supporting is called Sands and it stands for Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Charity. If you would like to help us reach our target of £2500 then we would appreciate it very much, whether it is £1 or £10....every little helps :)

Candy's (Robyn's aunt) story-"I found out I was pregnant in March 2008 and at my first scan we discovered it was twins...we were over the moon.  However we were also told that one of the twin girls had a condition called 'gastroschesis' which is a kind of bowel hernia but it could be treated after she was born in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.  We were told she would be fine and there was 95% chance that Summer would survive.  We were obviously worried but reassured by Nurses, Doctors and Consultants.

The months passed after so many appointments, scans etc   and then we reached 30 weeks.  We always said when we get to 30 weeks we can relax and really start to plan for the twins arrival. So we bought  a twin buggy, car seats, loads of clothes, bouncers...basically everything you need for twins.

Then on the 6th October in Luton & Dunstable Hospital we were told the devastating news that I had been dreading for the last 7 months, little Summer had lost her fight for life.   Our world turned upside down.

On the 22nd October I gave birth to Georgie & Summer .  It was the hardest thing I have ever had to go through....obviously relieved and happy that Georgie was ok but so desperately sad for Summer.

We both held Summer and took pictures of her with Georgie. My husband had to go home to look after our 4year old son and all the Doctors and consultants had gone.  It was just me, Georgie and Summer.  I could not take my eyes off her and just held her.

We held a funeral for Summer Gracie Evans on the 13th November 2008.

We both struggled badly for weeks and weeks after and then I contacted Sands.  They were brilliant, they just listened.    Just to know that you could talk to someone any time was so comforting.  I still sometimes contact them now just for a chat.  Everyone you talk to at Sands has also gone through a similar experience which makes it a little easier too.  Its still a very low time in my life right now and I desperately want my baby Summer back but SAND's really pulled me out of a very dark place."

Devastatingly, every day in the UK, 17 babies are stillborn or die within the first 4 weeks of life.  Sands needs help to enable them to support people like us and also fund research that could prevent more babies from dying.
