Back in 1932, the Southern Railway built Dining Saloon No. 7864 to provide catering on their principal expresses. Fast forward thirty years and it arrived at the Bluebell Railway. It served as a static catering vehicle for many years, and has now been withdrawn. It sits underneath a tarpaulin at Horsted Keynes awaiting restoration.
7864 is the only surviving Southern Railway catering vehicle, and is therefore unique. It's in a sorry state, so the fundraising effort for its restoration is a big one. Previous fundraising efforts have included carriage shed tours, jam sales, concerts, and refreshment stands, and now it's time for another outdoor effort.
Deborah Salmon will be cycling 37 miles from London to Windsor on 7th September (plus a bit more if she gets lost!!), and Dave Clarke will be running the 13 miles of the inaugural Reigate half-marathon on 21st September. Please sponsor them in their efforts to help 7864 run again.
Thank you in advance for your support.
**UPDATE 14th SEPTEMBER ** Well, Deborah did it! 37 miles, no wrong turns, no aches and pains, and still smiling the following day. Huge thanks to all who have donated so far - you've been so generous that we've raised our target to keep Dave motivated next week!
** UPDATE 21st SEPTEMBER** Mission accomplished! After 2h 30, Dave crossed the finish line, and was still smiling. Thank you everyone for your generosity in supporting our efforts.
**UPDATE 23rd SEPTEMBER** We're absolutely astonished by everyone's generosity. Thank you all, 7864 times!
