JAYE NEEDS A £35,000 OPERATION TO WALK UNAIDED

When Melanie Cook knocked on Speedwell Fire Station's door for help, muggins here opened the door. After hearing about the fundraising required to finance an operation for Jaye to walk unaided, the end result was a 'no brainer'.

Jaye is a 5 year old old boy, who lives less than a mile from our fire station and happens to suffer from cerebral palsy. Apparently except in very few circumstances, the S.D.R.[selective dorsal rhizotomy] operation is not funded by the NHS. While the operation is not guaranteed to improve Jaye's quality of life, post operation reports have been extremely optimistic, so long as the child is less than 9 years of age. So sooner the better.

Jaye's situation has been reported to the Brigade in general and there is a determination to make this operation a reality.

While several challenges are in the pipeline, the main challenge took place between 5th & 11th May at Cabot Circus, Bristol. In the end a total of 61 firefighters and 2 members of Cabot Circus staff clocked up a total of 1,103 miles in a 6 3/4 day continuous relay on a treadmill. To make the challenge a little tougher, all the firefighters had to run in firekit, while carrying a breathing apparatus set.  While the planning was a logistical nightmare, all the headaches to keep the treadmill occupied around the clock resulted in a staggering donation of £15,195.96 from the general public. Having Jaye's family at the finish was an emotional experience for all concerned , especially in view of reaching our target of £35,000 on the last day.

After all the elation at the finish, the feeling was one of deflation to learn that the predicted costs for Jaye's operation and post operative care had increased by 50% from £50,000 to £75,000. The Children's Hospital has done an initial assessment on Jaye and determined that he needs up to 4 sessions per day.

So the battle continues!

There will also be a rescheduled  double Everest ladder climb at Cribbs on 12th July. The climb will last about 8 hours from 1100-1900 hours.

Lots of other personal challenges are also being organised and the hope is that we can raise the funds by September 2014.

Let's make this happen for Jaye's sake!! We have nearly done this! We've raised the funds for Jaye's operation so with just a little more work, we can bring that operation date even nearer.
