Center for Inclusion Health at AHN's West Penn Healthy Food Center is starting an urban community garden!
First, you might ask what is the Healthy Food Center? We provide healthy food sources, nutrition education and support for the food insecure population. We strive to provide healthy food resources and encourage nutritious meals at home, while helping food insecure families bridge the meal gap and provide a warm hand off for wrap around services. We strive to improve health through nutrition in a “food is medicine” model.
Why this is important? Because 15.4% of people in the greater Pittsburgh Area are facing food insecurity an increase of 44% from 2018. Children are facing an astonishing 57% increase of food insecurity from 2018.
Why a garden? A garden will allow our patients and community to work and engage in a space where they can learn how to grow their own fresh vegetables and herbs. They will then be able to take this produce home to cook healthy, low-budget meals. Not only will the garden assist in alleviating food insecurity and reduce symptoms of chronic illness that our clients, but it will also create stronger community relationships.
