We are a group of 15 high school students from all over the United States, who, in July of 2013, embarked on the journey of a lifetime to Peru. This 3 week venture was a part of Lifeworks International, an organization for teens to experience community service and adventure. Our main project was based in a small town called Rumira, in which we built a greenhouse next to a small grade school. The children who attend this school do not have the typical American diet of pancakes and omelets. In fact, these children often do not have the luxury of a breakfast at all, and if they get to eat anything, it is sugar water. Their lunches and dinners are not much more nutritious. Our mission on this trip was to construct a sustainable greenhouse and plant a variety of vegetables to provide these children with the nutrition all kids need to grow. By the time we left, a newly-built greenhouse was in place, complete with cabbage, beets, and every vegetable in between. This greenhouse project was orchestrated by Mysmallhelp, a group that Leander Hollings started in 2007 to help people in Peru and Nepal. In just five years, the organization has built a school in Nepal, provided transportation to and from school/work to 17 disabled Peruvians in need, and it is currently in need of $20,000 for the purchase of a bus, which will be more cost-effective than renting a vehicle to transport Peruvians with disabilities. Mysmallhelp also aims to build bathrooms for some Peruvian families in need, which will cost another $10,000. Our mission is to raise as much money as possible, which will go directly to the efforts of Leander and all the volunteers at Mysmallhelp who are working to better the lives of those in need in Peru and Nepal.
