Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am taking part in a sky dive to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Charity which helps save the life's of people that have been diagnosed with leukaemia. My dear fiend charlie Saunders is also taking part in the sky dive and helping raise money on the fundraiser.

My story: since the passing away of my dad "Andrew harkin" on the 15/11/2014 my life changed forever, it will never be the same with out him, for me and the rest of my family. And I am taking part in this to help other families that have been affected by blood cancer and still fighting the disease.

My dad was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia on the 9/7/2014 when he was admitted to kent and Canterbury hospital,  were he had intensive chemotherapy up until September 2014. We was told that due to how agreessive the leukaemia was he would also need a bone more transplant from a donor on the Anthony Nolan register or a sibling if they where a match, he would only be able to have the transplant if the chemotherapy had worked and killed all leukimic cells, he had 2 sibling matches so we all felt so positive. My dad can home and looked a lot more happier and positive after the chemo he is such a strong man always worked and always helped other before himself, but after a week of being home rashes started showing on his skin and he was beginning to look Ill again, he also stopped walking where he lost 4 stone in weight., he would only use a wheel chair. he was then admitted back to hospital in late September where he caught an infection in his body called Septicaemia which is a life threatening infection on its own and gets worse very quick, luckly he was treated for this. Now we only had one option left due to my dad having lymphoma 5 years ago he had been giving maximum of this type of chemotherapy one persons body could take. And they said he could go to the Royal free hospital in London where he could have a different type of chemotherapy a lot stronger but there would be a 50% chance it would work. While in London having treatment my dad start to get very I'll again the septiceima must of came back and we where told that the treatment wasn't working, they couldn't do anymore. My dad came home on the 8/11/2014  as he just wanted to be home with us, we were told that if he kept having platlets and bloods he could still have a few months but the doctors came round a few days after him being home and said his body was giving up and he would only have a short week left,  me and my mum had been with my dad every step of the way and made him feel as comfortable as we could with the time we had left, 3 days later on the 15/11/2014 at 3.15pm my dad passed away peacefully at home, with cause of death being the Septicemia and AML.

I love and miss him dearly and would of done anything I could to change the outcome of what happened but unfortunately there was nothing anyone could do, and I just want to try and change the life's of other families  being affected by the same situation.

The symptoms of AML are caused by replacement of normal bone marrow with leukemic cells, which causes a drop in red blood cell apl atelets, normal white blood cells. These symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, easy brushing and bleeding, and increased risk of infection. This cancer progresses rapidly and typically fatal within weeks or months if left untreated.
