Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page for Diabetes UK.

Together, as a team we have decided to do The Million Step Challenge to support fundraising for Diabetes UK.

In 2003, aged 9, I was diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus. I was bullied throughout school for being a 'Diabetic Freak' and over the years have spent a lot of time in hospital. In 2005, aged 11, I developed an eating disorder called Diabulimia, still not recognised by medical professionals in the UK.

For the past 3 years I have suffered with constant nausea, vomiting, dehydration and exhaustion. This made daily living, household chores and work responsibilities extremely hard.

On the 16th of April I was admitted to hospital after a severe Hypoglycaemic attack, where they had to drill into my shin bone to cannulate me and I was unable to walk for 6 weeks. During my 3 month stay I suffered with food poisoning, Septic Shock and C. Diff which meant a month in isolation with little no outside contact. I was diagnosed with Diabetic Gastroparesis. Another condition to manage after the Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Neuropathy.

I was discharged from Ward 11 at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on the 14th of July. I came home with a 24 hour pump delivering my anti sickness medication and a concoction of other tablets to help stabilise me at home.

I am now waiting for an operation at Aintree Hospital in Liverpool to have a Gastric Pacemaker fitted in hope this will stop the nausea and vomiting allowing my stomach to work as it should

Myself, family and friends have decided to take part in this challenge to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and the serious complications that can occur because of the condition.
