Story
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the UK and worldwide and therefore tackling it is a top priority. The BHF work tirelessly to help reduce heart disease through funding research and providing education and support.
My biggest link to the BHF is through my job in a previous life as a postgraduate researcher at the London Centre for Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine, UCL - it was there I learned how to actually grow beating pieces of heart tissue in the lab. Although a transplant is currently the best option for people who've had a heart attack, hearts are in desperately short supply. By growing small pieces of heart tissue in the lab, scientists are able to bypass the issues of donor shortage and organ rejection. It is cutting edge, life-saving research like this that BHF helps fund.
I found all of this fascinating, but I also learned the importance of taking such research done in the lab, and realising it in the clinic. Currently these treatments are mostly in the lab, so please dig deep to help make the next-generation's life-saving treatments a reality.
Thank you!
