PBI UK provides life-saving support to Human Rights Defenders. Human Rights Defenders risk their livelihoods, their liberty and in many cases their lives fighting for basic rights. PBI stands shoulder to shoulder with at-risk defenders to keep defenders alive and help their activism thrive.

Story

If ever I see a road in London I can ride with no traffic I'm drawn down it so the idea of an event where they close the roads for me to ride down is too good to turn down.  I've been entering the ballot for the PruRide 100 every year.  This year I actually won a place and I'm very excited and quite scared!

Why PBI?

My brother (pictured with me and our bikes) is an active participant in a related charity, ENCA.  Through his work in Central America I too have become captivated by the plight of many rural communities in the region, and in particular in Honduras.  These communities are under threat from western multinational companies that operate with no care for them.  When they speak up to try to counter the illegal actions of these companies they are met with violence, intimidation and murder. While the government says it protects the activists it in fact supports the agents of the violence as it wants the money the west provides.

At a recent meeting arranged by ENCA I was struck by the simplicity and power of the work that PBI do to protect activists in countries like Honduras.  These activists are brave citizens of the countries they live in and love.  They put their lives on the line to change their countries for the better.  Without the work of PBI it's difficult to imagine how many of them would still be alive to continue their work.

PBI has been working to support human rights and promote nonviolence for 35 years. We send teams of international observers to areas of conflict to provide protective accompaniment to local human rights defenders whose lives and work are under threat. Our work is based on principles of non-partisanship and non-interference, in the belief that lasting transformation of violent conflict cannot be imposed from outside but must be based on the capacity of local people. With your help, we can continue to support Human Rights Defenders.
