I'm planning to take part in the Longest Day Down challenge on June 21st 2015. Essentially, its riding from John O'Groats to Lands End in 24 hours on a motorcycle which has been put together for no more than £300 (Brakes and Tyres are outside this budget!). I'm doing it with a couple of mates from York as part of a group of 40 bikers from around the UK. Its 900(ish) miles and we'll not be using motorways.
My motivation for completing this challenge is several fold.
- We are told that, as people have longer life expectancy, there is a 1:2 chance of contracting a cancerous disease which are pretty poor odds. However, significant medical breakthroughs mean that many types of cancer are now treatable and indeed some are curable.
- A couple of great people I have had the pleasure of knowing have been taken from us by the disease over the last few years - Kevin Hall a fantastic mate from Kilburn/Matlock and Keith Walker, my cousin Susan's husband. Both had fantastic senses of humour and endured their health problems stoically.
- After university I worked in cancer research for 3 years. It's an area I'm still fascinated with and I wonder what would have happened if I'd continued down that career path.
Anyway, lets see what we can all raise for Cancer Research by doing this daft challenge.
The bike I have for the challenge is a Kawasaki ZZR600 which was bought with a broken engine for £100. A second hand engine and overhauling many parts has resulted in a bike which passed its MOT in February, so I plan to use it and prove it over the next few months before the challenge to give it the best chance of completing the run successfully - I'm too unfit to push it!!
There are some photos and videos of the bike and the route in the gallery below. Have a laugh/look and any support you are able to give will be really appreciated by me and the thousands of people it will help in the future.
Thanks for reading this.
