Aimee Shawyer London Marathon

London Marathon 2019 · 28 April 2019 ·
In my brother Jack’s short life he inspired many people he met – from doctors and teachers, to friends and family.
At 12 months old Jack weighed only 15lbs, he was tiny. He was bringing up his food undigested, his motor skills were poor and he was living with a condition that caused his eyes to move from side to side. His symptoms lead doctors to believe he had cerebral palsy, but tests later revealed he had a rare condition called Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease, affecting the central nervous system. When Jack was 4 he was granted a wish by Make-A-Wish UK to go to Disneyland Paris. Jack loved everything Disney, especially Mickey Mouse – so it was easy for him to choose what his wish would be.
In January 1998, we were jetted off to Paris for a trip we would never forget! Our time at Disneyland was amazing; and something we as a family will always be grateful for. Sadly, my brothers condition continued to deteriorate – eventually he was fed through a tube, and lost his ability to walk and to talk. The doctors told us that he would probably live until he was 7. We got him to his 21st birthday, and two weeks after Jack sadly passed away.
I hope that I can get as much support and help to give many other children and their families the wishes that they deserve.
Thank you very much for your kind donations and good wishes! I was unable to run in the April 2019 due to illness and Make-A-Wish were able to secure my place for 2020, which then got delayed due to COVID-19 I can't wait to finally cross that finish line for such an amazing charity.

Make-A-Wish UK grant magical wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions. Granting their wish provides seriously ill children with hope for the future, strength to cope and resilience to fight their condition. They’re given quality time away from the daily realities of living with their condition and given the chance to make magical memories they can treasure forever – whatever their future may hold. We want to transform the lives of 1,000 children this year by granting their One True Wish!
