Mimi was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer) last September and was given chemotherapy for it over the months that followed at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. In the words of her doctor there 'she dealt with it very bravely, intelligently and with great dignity', undergoing months of treatment which often left her in pain and enfeebled. Despite this, and suffering associated ailments, she always looked forward to the day she would be able to leave the infusions, transfusions and pills behind. Sadly, that day never came and she passed away on May 9th.

She never complained about her condition publicly, and always put on a positive face to the outside world. Only those who knew her well saw how much distress she was in at times. Despite that, she  had nothing but praise for the doctors and nurses in the haematology department who cared for her, and came to regard them as friends. They were superb, and she appreciated all they did for her.

Similarly, she also greatly valued the practical support given by the Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF), a small cancer charity associated with the hospital. Their cheery presence, with their free flat down the road for carers and relatives, a friendly café in the waiting room, and transport, physiotherapy and counselling services for patients and their loved ones, helped take away a lot of the pain and stress, and continues to this day. We never once saw the ELF people, mostly volunteers, without a welcoming smile on their face and an offer of help. It was one of Mimi's final wishes that, rather than buying flowers for the funeral, any kind donations should go to help ELF.
