Pets As Therapy is the national charity. We enhance health and well being in the community through the visits of trusted volunteers with their behaviourally assessed animals. We provide a visiting service in hospitals, hospices, nursing and care homes, schools and other venues all across the UK.

Story

Our beloved son and brother, Alexander - known as Xan to his family and Alex to his friends - died suddenly on 13 April 2018. Nearly seven years ago, a little black spaniel transformed his life: Gladstone (Xan always liked history and politics!) gave him a reason to get up in the morning, despite suffering from debilitating bipolar disorder and side-effects from the heavy medication.

Xan knew he had to take his medication because he had a responsibility to stay well for Gladstone. Even when Xan was most ill, Gladstone motivated him to leave the house in order to throw tennis balls for him in the park. Through this, Xan made a strong circle of friends.

We have chosen Pets as Therapy for their wonderful work in helping to support people with debilitating conditions and to encourage children as they learn how to read - something that Xan found all too difficult himself, as he was very dyslexic.
