Story

HI GUYS!

I go by the name of Alex, and I’m always looking for thrills!

I do things like Zorbing, paintballing, mountain climbing, diving into wind tunnels, snowboarding, going on expeditions to the jungle, going down luges and up gondolas, getting near active geysers, rock climbing, chilling with baby animals, painting my face and much much more!

Plus, I've met David Attenborough.

A few weeks ago I saw a big advert on the tube which advertised an amazing opportunity to ABSEIL down the ole’ Battersea Power Station to raise money for charity. So I naturally jumped at the chance to be suspended backwards in a harness over nothing but, well... nothing! This is the first time this has ever been done and I decided I didn't want to miss out!

WHAT’S THE POINT?

So, on Sunday the 2nd of May, 2010, I, Alex, WILL BE abseiling 100 metres down the power station for a charity called MAG. This stands for the Mines Advisory Group, which actually works worldwide to clear remnants of conflict in warzones, such as landmines, missiles and ammunition. Countries they work in include Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Congo, Cambodia and Vietnam, to name but a few!

They are co-laureate of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, and are an established charity (since 1989) focused on education and tackling poverty on top of everything else! Here’s a link to their website if you want to find out more:

They also have a YouTube channel where you can see videos of what they’re doing:

And for those of you want to keep BANG up to date, their facebook page is the place for you. I, for one, am a fan, and you should join too!

I know that not everyone is into facebook so they’ve got accounts on many MANY different social networks, so there’s no excuse not to get into it!

About the charity

Every single day, 15 people are killed or injured because of landmines and other explosive weapons. Half of all civilian casualties are children. MAG finds and destroys these weapons to save lives and rebuild futures; helping people to grow crops, attend school and build homes.
