When I was 10 weeks old my mom and grandma were in the grocery store when I turned blue. After being rushed to a hospital it was established that I had VSD which is Ventricular Septal Defect. After undergoing open heart surgery to repair the hole in my heart, I've managed to live a healthy life for the past twenty years. When I was ten weeks old in 1997 there were around 10 doctors in the country who could perform this surgery. Thanks to places like the American Heart Association education and prevention of heart disease have been major aspects of their work which have improved medical knowledge over the past twenty years. As heart disease is the nations number 1 killer and stroke is our nations number 4 killer, the American Heart Association has conducted research, advocated for better health, provided education and continuously attempts to reach populations at risk of heart disease. By donating to them you can help prevent over half a million deaths per year in the USA alone and educate those who are fortunate enough to avoid heart disease. By donating to the American Heart Association this holiday season, you are appreciating and valuing life and helping families that face this all too common misfortune.
