We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

I’ve never run a marathon. This is my first request for sponsorship since my mother sponsored my silence aged 10...

As some of you know, my mother, brother and sister got cancer
recently; and my mother, brother and father died.

My sister and wife have persuaded me it’s a good idea to do 3
successive ‘marathon’ events in aid of Cancer Research: one off-road, one on the road, and one on a bike:

  1. On 18th March I’ll be running the Grizzly Off-Road Marathon which includes over 3500’ of steep hills, endless pebble beaches, and bogs so deep a very fit friend of mine once got stuck in one and had to be rescued.
  2. Next I’m doing the London Marathon – hopefully self-explanatory
  3. Finally I’m going to cycle the length of the Tramuntana mountain range in one go - almost half the height of Everest and 160km in a day.

Hopefully this meets your ‘worth sponsoring’ standard.

We’ve been lucky. My sister and mother had world leading
treatment at The Royal Marsden. While there are many worthy cancer charities, Cancer Research is focused on helping people survive. It's the largest funder of primary medical research in the UK. Their money has helped very material improvement in cancer prognosis over the last 30 years. In terms of the cancers my family got:

  • Breast cancer 5 year survival has improved from 50% to over 80%.
  • Lung cancer mortality has dropped by 25%.
  • Pancreatic cancer has a bad prognosis (because it’s caught so late) but my mother survived an extra 18 surprisingly happy months, because she was given treatment that didn’t even exist a couple of years ago.

30% of us will get cancer at some point in our lives - that means almost every family will have close relative get it.

I’d be very grateful if you’d sponsor me.

Many thanks

Alexis
