Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 2nd of April I will be running the Brighton Marathon to raise money for the Living with CAH charity. My brother, Lewis, was born with salt-wasting congenital adrenal hyperplasia. This charity helps to raise awareness of the condition, support families living with the condition and fund research.
A bit about CAH
CAH is a genetic disorder, which prevents the adrenal glands from functioning correctly. Therefore, medication is required to replace the hormones the adrenal glands would normally make. If the body doesn’t get these then it can go into an adrenal crisis. This is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. Adrenal crisis can occur within the first few days after birth. It can also be triggered at any age by illness, injury or physical stress such as surgery.
Whilst individuals with this condition can lead a normal life, the lack of awareness surrounding the condition, among the public and medical professionals, poses a threat to life when an adrenal crisis occurs.
As a family, we have experienced situations where Lewis’s life was put at risk due to an adrenal crisis. There have been times when he has been going into adrenal crisis in hospital and due to the lack of awareness of the condition medical professionals have failed to recognise the signs of adrenal crisis, with my mum having to intervene and administer his emergency injection to save his life.
About the charity
The Living with CAH charity aims to improve the lives of those living with the condition by:
- Giving support to everyone living with CAH – those with the condition and their families and friends.
- Increase awareness of the condition among the medical profession and the public
- To raise funds to support research
I will be facing my biggest physical and mental challenge yet by running the Brighton Marathon to help raise awareness and money for this charity so they can continue helping individuals living with CAH.
Any donations would be really greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much!
