Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Emma suffered a major injury to her left elbow one afternoon at the end of the summer holidays in 2018, falling off a swing in the playground.  She was taken by ambulance to King’s, and underwent two lengthy operations in quick succession, to stabilise and reassemble her arm.

Over the following weeks and months Emma received lots of care and attention from orthopaedic, physiotherapy, hand therapy, acupuncture and neurophysiology specialists at the hospital, all with the aim of helping her regain functional use of her arm.  Over time it became apparent that this would not be possible without further surgery, and so another major operation was arranged under two orthopaedic consultants.  This procedure took place in October 2019 and involved five more days as an inpatient on Princess Elizabeth ward, with a lot of follow-on outpatient treatment which is still ongoing.

It has been a really tough journey for Emma with lots of ups and downs, but the care and commitment of everyone who has looked after her has been truly impressive, and we are very grateful to live in a country where medical treatment of this kind is available completely free of charge to any child who needs it.  King’s is however desperately in need of funding.  We want to support the hospital and its efforts to provide excellent care to its patients in any way that we can. We are walking 50 miles of the South Downs Way over three days in February, which will be a challenge in the winter months, especially for Emma whose involvement in physical activity has been severely curtailed over the past 17 months as a result of her injury and treatment.

We would be enormously grateful if you could support our effort by making a donation to the King’s College Hospital Charity, which will help to fund equipment, facilities and research to make the best care possible for patients.  We are hoping in particular to raise enough money to fund the purchase of a specific new piece of equipment which will help to improve the experience of children undergoing orthopaedic procedures.
