Adidas Women's 5K Challenge 2009 · 6 September 2009 ·

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds such as the smoke alarm, alarm clock, intruder alarms and baby monitors. These amazing dogs also help deaf people to leave loneliness behind by providing love, companionship and emotional support.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

As most of you will know by now, I am running the Adidas Women's 5K Challenge in Hyde Park on Sunday 6th of September in aid of Hearning Dogs for Deaf People.

I have chosen to support the Hearing Dogs charity to help the deaf community that my daughter is a part of.  Over the years we have heard many stories of the positive impact a Hearning Dog can have on a deaf person's life and I hope to be able to raise enough money to train a Hearing Dog to allow another deaf person to lead an independant and safer life.

Nearly nine million of the UK population experience some degree of hearing loss. That’s one person in every seven. Over 650,000 of these people are severely or profoundly deaf and could benefit from a hearing dog.   Deafness can be a very isolating and lonely disability; a hearing dog can offer increased independence, greater confidence, companionship and a feeling of security by alerting their deaf owners to sounds hearing people take for granted.

Since 1982, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has trained over 1400 hearing dogs. From small beginnings they now work to fulfil a growing demand for these specially trained dogs.  The dogs themselves vary from the largest, scruffiest mongrel to the smallest pedigree but they are all easily recognisable by their distinctive burgundy jacket and lead slips, which also helps to identify the recipient’s otherwise ‘invisible’ disability.  Whenever possible, the dogs are selected from rescue centres, but they are also donated by breeders and members of the public, with the remainder coming from the Charity's own breeding scheme.

As the charity receive no government funding, they rely totally on the generosity of individuals and organisations to continue transforming the lives of deaf people, so please dig deep and donate now.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Once again thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.
