Story
The 15th September is my birthday and I'm going to be celebrating it by... running the Bristol Half Marathon!
I will be running in memory of my beautiful nan Beryl, who sadly passed away on 5 December last year. She was the loveliest and most caring lady, and I was lucky to have her as my nan.
Sadly my nan became unwell after suffering a stroke, and she slowly deteriorated over the years suffering with many of the symptoms of dementia.
In the last year of her life she suffered tremendously with other health complications - she was constantly in pain but was often unable to communicate what she was feeling and where the pain was because of her dementia (e.g. not remembering words, confusion, etc). So healthcare professionals often found it difficult to help her.
She eventually got to the point with her dementia where she could no longer remember how to chew or swallow. This meant that she slowly deteriorated as her body shut down from the lack of foods and liquids. She spent most of her last days bed bound as she was unable to do much else. My nan was lovely, caring, and funny, so to see her suffering was a horrible experience.
I miss my nan greatly, and I hope by raising money for the Alzheimer's Society it will help contribute to some sort of cure. Hopefully one day we will beat Alzheimer's and Dementia so nobody else will need to suffer like my nan did!
Please support me by donating generously to this great charity! Thank you all for your support and donations, it really means a lot :)
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
