Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is not a well known condition - I hadn't heard of it until recently, but a wonderful family I know have a little boy who has the condition and this has spurred me on to want to help!  SMA is a degenerative neuromuscular condition which affects around 100 babies born in the UK each year. There is currently no cure or treatment to slow or reverse the effects of SMA, but with some amazing research being conducted around the world there is hope - there are signs of a breakthrough being close which makes fundraising all the more important. Your kind donations will help SMA Support UK fund this vital research and support families around the UK.

Kilimanjaro has always been on my 'list' and so combining an adventure with an opportunity to raise some money seemed like a good idea! Now, having read the blogs, seen the pictures and heard some not-so-successful stories, the challenge is looking a little daunting...! Training will start soon (well, sooner or later) and I'm determined to get to the top, no matter how deep I have to dig! I'm sure it will make it easier knowing that my blood (hopefully metaphorical), sweat (which will be plentiful) and tears (no doubt by the bucketful) are helping to raise much needed funds for research and support for this rare condition. Any donation, large or small, would be very gratefully received - every penny donated will go to SMA Support UK.

For those keeping a watchful eye, I'll be updating this page as and when phone signal (if that's a thing halfway up a mountain in Africa!) allows....I'll be doing the climb between the 25th of March and the 5th of April - the 7 day Rongai route to be exact! Hopefully you'll see me standing under the sign in the picture, almost 6000m above sea level, sometime around the 3rd of April...wish me luck!
