23 years ago Carol, my wife, and I had our first child. Joshua was born eight weeks early and weighed just four pounds. He spent the first four weeks of his life in a special care baby unit in an incubator. He never looked back from that early start and has blossomed into the young man that he is today.

During the time in hospital we were supported by nurses and other health professionals. Then there was little organised support, we were advised to buy dolls clothes as there were so few clothes specifically for prem babies. Fifteen months later our second child Miriam was born five weeks prematurely, she though bounced into the world a healthy six pounds and came straight home.

Now we have much more support and charities to help too. Advances in medicine means that babies can survive that are born earlier and earlier. This means that even more support is needed. Charities like Bliss provide real meaningful support. From medical research to support groups for parents, from equipment to clothes and of course someone to talk to.
