Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My 11-year-old son, Stuart, has Asberger's syndrome. It is not as severe as classic autism, but is on the autistic scale. The following web site gives a good explanation of what it is:

http://www.autism.org.uk/about-autism/autism-and-asperger-syndrome-an-introduction/what-is-asperger-syndrome.aspx

My family and I have had good support from the NHS and from Stuart's school, but it remains something that is very difficult to cope with and is deeply stressful for parents. It is such a complicated syndrome, of which relatively little is understood. There is no cure, but lots that can be done to make life for sufferers as normal as possible. Part of that is helping those around the sufferers to understand how those people think and react.

Stuart displays some of the classic symptoms but not others. In many respect he is quite a normal kid, but he finds communication and social interaction difficult and, as a result, displays many signs of anxiety and is very clingy.

Some famous people with Asberger's syndrome or similar traits are listed here: http://www.asperger-syndrome.me.uk/people.htm.

Unlike some of these people, Stuart is not intellectually brilliant (probably thankfully). He is also very gentle and is well coordinated, whereas many sufferers display the opposite characteristics. This is an example of why is can take many years to diagnose (and why many people go un-diagnosed throughout life).

By donating to Scottish Autism you will be helping to enable people living with autism and Asbergers in Scotland through the whole life journey.

I apologise for commiting only to a "wimpy" 5k run. There are no 10k runs coming up this year anywhere near home. But I'll promise to unofficially follow up with another 5k shortly thereafter.
