Story
As some off you are aware I lost my Dad a few years ago to Dementia he was 86. My Dad was a very giving man he retired at the age of 76 from driving Concrete Mixers then did voluntary driving for Dial a Ride Barnsley, even giving his Christmas days up to help old people (to be honest most where younger than him) go to their families and friends. My Dad was quite a character, everybody knew when he was around, loud and proud and embarrassing at times but everyone had a nice word for him.
When my Dad was diagnosed with dementia it affected him quite rapidly going from a very strong character to a very confused and scared old man. He became aggressive and to be honest quite hard work for my Mum and the rest of the family at times. He would go missing in the middle of the night (Quite often to be honest) and would be seeing things that was not there. But my Mum was a tower of strength. Never talk of care homes, she would say this is his home and this is where he belongs.
So this is where I come in, I saw first-hand the upset and trauma this caused my Mum and me during my Dads Illness and I often said why can’t people help us, this is not fair. To be honest these charities are working at full capacity with limited funding to help families cope with this dreadful illness that my Dad had no way of fighting due to the fact he didn’t no there was a fight to have.
So as you all know I am a little over weight at the moment ( if you don’t look at the picture above) and i have a little over 6 months to get in shape and then run the London Marathon 2018 ( 26.2 Miles ).
This is going to be two massive battles for me personally, 1. to get fit and 2. to run the race to completion. So i hope that you can spare as much as possible to support me in this life changing event.
Dementia is one of the biggest growing problems we face as our parents and ourselves grow old.
Thank you for reading my story.
Andy.
