We provide help and hope to everyone living with dementia.

Story

Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever.Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.

On Sunday 5th April I will be running my first marathon and here is why...

Five years ago my Dad was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. This meant he went from being an intelligent and active person who lectured about his passion for opera and classical music to someone who needed constant, around the clock care. This wasn't a gradual change, it was literally over night after his first stroke because of a blockage in the brain.

Since then he has had a number of further strokes and his condition has deteriorated meaning the care he has needed has become more and more challenging every day.

If you have been close to someone who has had Dementia or Alzheimer's you will know that the distress that it causes for that person is equally matched by the person that has to care for them when they are a family member.

The carer for my Dad over the first three years was my Mum and I honestly don't know how she coped looking after Dad almost single handedly. We have, of course, supported Mum ensuring that the right support has been there when she needs it and supported her with what she has needed at home to help look after Dad but she has in so many ways looked after him all by herself.

Christmas 2019, Dad finally went into a permanent home which was both incredibly sad but also a relief in many ways as we know that Mum can take a bus for 5 minutes to see Dad as much as she likes but still have her freedom to do what she enjoys the most.

The work that the Alzheimer's Society and so many other similar charities do to support the carers of loved ones, so they can get from one day to the next, is just amazing!

Please support this charity, not to just raise money, but also the awareness of this condition that doesn't just affect the person with the condition but whole families who have to live with caring for someone everyday.

This is my first marathon and I have never asked for sponsorship for myself before, although Stamford Orchestra did raise £2000 for Dementia UK a couple of years ago. I'm trying to initially get to £500 and then any more would be an incredible bonus.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for considering to sponsor me!
