Little Steps

Andrew Ruck is raising money for Bromley Brighter Beginnings

Little Steps · 4 October 2020

We distribute baby, child and household essentials to families living in financial hardship in the London Borough of Bromley. Most of our items are donated by local parents. Families, many of whom are fleeing domestic violence, are referred to our service by health professionals in the area.

Story

This is the unremarkable story of a 45 year old bloke, somehow screwing up his back over the last 2 months, (without any obvious cause), to the point of being hospitalised for a week and not being able to move without excruciating pain. That’s me. I have learnt lots about backs in the intervening period and now know that I’ve got a prolapsed disc in my lower back with a healthy dose of sciatica for afters.

The real killer in this is that the road to full normal mobility relies on pushing through the pain and moving around as much as possible. Walking and therefore pain is both my friend and enemy. So, to begin with I have started trying to take a few steps each day and incrementally increasing the number, generally aided by a bucketful of meds to kill the pain.

I figured that any extra motivation to take just a few more steps each time, would be most welcome and that it would be good if something positive could come from this too. Hence this fundraising page, for Bromley Brighter Beginnings, a charity who do great work for families and parents in need in the Borough of Bromley where I live.

My aim is to build up to 10,000 steps in a day without pain relief.  I’m not putting a time frame on this as this is not a race, and starting from a base of struggling to get to 30 steps in one day with morphine and other stuff, means success seems a very long way off.  I need to take things as the title states, using “little steps”.

It would be great if you could feel able to add to the motivation in the name of Bromley Brighter Beginnings.

Thank you

Andrew
