Following on from last year's £3000 raised for Breast Cancer Care - we are aiming to smash that and raise £4000 for MacMillan Cancer Care, This year we will be walking through the night of 10th July to do the Lyke Wake Walk - 40 miles across the North York Moors to be completed within 24 hours.
Thousands have tackled the walk and thousands have failed trying but I am confident our team will succeed and raise many thousands of punds for a brilliant charity.
Please dig deep and pass on to as many people as possible as time is short!
Update - post walk
It gives me great pleasure?? to report my eighth crossing - already a Master of Misery - not sure what 8 or 10 crossings brings - maybe a medal for stupidity!
On the night of the 10th we set off from Sheepwash at 11pm on a hot muggy night with a 14 strong team of men and women from Boots. I have never been so glad to leave a start point with the midges in full swing and feasting on the unsuspecting innocent walkers. Of the 14 starters only one other had done the walk before. This is my eighth time - you would think I would know better - and the first for 10 years - time dulls the pain!
We were ably supported throughout by Robert, Helen, Anton and Ted - without whose help we would never have finished.
The aim was to raise £4000 for MacMillan and although the totals are not in yet we should achieve this thanks to every one's hard work and kind sponsorship from Cotswolds (maps and compasses), Harrogate Spa (bottled water) and Yorkshire Tea (tea loaf).
We were relieved to get onto Carlton Bank and away from the bugs and into some fresher air - if windy - and progressed on time to Hasty Bank. A quick stop and then the climb up in beautiful conditions to see a beautiful sun rise before the fog came down and obscured it at Ralph's Cross! The conditions were fast and very dry - the driest I have experienced We were ahead of time but not the quick thinking support crew! Thanks guys for the fresh bacon butties at 5.30am - sorry Robert for spoiling your night!!
Leaving Ralph's Cross the long hauls across Hamer and Wheeldale Moor - where the sun came out. It was still very windy and very dry. This is the first time dust has been a problem on the walk and several of us were looking like miners by this time - thank goodness for baby wipes! Sadly we lost Abbie at Hamer House - but well done - great effort at only 14 years old! The descent into Wheeldale Beck cost us Ian and Wendy - hope the knees and ankles are recovering well. Sooo close!!
At Ellerbeck we were met by a passing train from the NYMR - great timing guys! Shame it was a diesel - it's just not the same!!!!!! but looking at the burnt patches of grass around I can understand why. At Ellerbeck we were joined by the Team from Pickering and my son - but not by Ian W and Neil!! - better look with the timings next time!
Leaving here at 11.45 we set off for the final march over Fylingdales Moor. The reward of seeing Lila Cross is always offset by the realisation of just how far is still to go! The radio mast never gets any closer - EVER!!
Quick meeting and fresh cups of tea before the last stretch to the mast. Cold beers for all at the end. Finished in warm sunshine - the relief obvious to all. Some said they even enjoyed it in a sado-masochistic way!
So very well done to the following succesful LWW Virgins
Roger Lewis, Steve Collins, Richard Horsewood, Chris Day, Maryann Davis, Andy Purll, Alison Leitch, Janette Chadwick and Liz Bowden - Witches and Dirgers now!!
