Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My wife June, died from breast cancer on Friday 6th July 2018 aged 54. Her battle began in 1999 with the cancer returning in 2001, 2014, 2016 and 2018. We had been married for 18yrs.
I am still adjusting to life on my own and i wanted to complete a challenge that was a fitting memory for June but also one which would help me to come to terms with her death. I simply miss June and I am still finding it difficult to adjust to life on my own.
June loved holidays in Turkey, particularly Oludeniz area (cover photo) , walking to Kayakoy village and back in a day, with a stop for Gozleme (pancakes) at a cafe in Kayakoy before the return leg. We have many happy memories of the Fethiye area and in memory of June i have decided to go outside my comfort zone and walk the whole length of the Lycian Way, West to East from Fethiye to Antalya to raise money for the Boston Butterfly Hospice for people with life limiting illnesses.
The hike is 438km / 272miles and i am planning on completing it in approx. 24 days with a few days B&B in a hotel in Oludeniz at the end.
I have not done any proper hiking or wilderness camping before. I plan to camp out at least 20 of the 24 days with a few nights in a guest house / B&B to allow for the comfort of a real bed, shower, eat hot food and charge mobile phone and power banks.
I will soon see if my planning and preparation and practical advice from friends has paid off. Sore legs and shoulders (pack weight approx 18-22kg depending on water and food required), hunger, thirst and coping with solitude will undoubtedly test me at times, but stunning views, and inner mental well being will be the positive trade off.
Life is one long journey, if i don't do this now i will just be another person who says, well i plan to do it next year....
I fly out on the 22nd April and start on 24th, with my intention of having my feet in a hotel swimming pool by 18th May 2019.
I plan to update my photos on this site as i go along.
Thanks for reading.
