Story

I am an 87 year old resident of Nightingale House in South London.

Today, I took part in my first-ever sponsored fun run, the Parallel London 5k.  Not only was this  an activity I would never have thought possible only five years ago, but I am delighted to report I crossed the finish line unaided!

When I moved to Nightingale House four years ago, I was wheelchair- bound and dependent on the use of manual hoisting equipment to move around.

Since then, through weekly physio sessions with Nightingale Hammerson physiotherapist Michael Stokes to build up my strength, mobility and movement, I can now walk 40m unaided, get in and out of cars and generally move around a lot better.

It was completely my idea to take part in a run, as a platform to fundraise and give something back to Nightingale Hammerson. I understand I am the first resident in Nightingale House's history to take on such a challenge.

I have been focused on this race since January!

Michael accompanied me, along with his wife and two young children, supporting me every step of the way.

My wheelchair was there for backup, but, with Michael, I walked sections of the course, intermittently, and, most importantly, achieved my main aim of crossing the finish line unaided! I was cheered on by Nightingale Hammerson supporters, staff and volunteers.

I am in utter disbelief, and full of gratitude, that I have far surpassed my fundraising goal of £2,000 and am now at £7,500.  If I get to £10,000 in aid of my much-loved Home to help benefit even more people from the outstanding care I have received at Nightingale House, then this really will be a dream come true.

Thank you.
