From Heathrow to East Croydon for Prossy and Leah · 26 July 2012

We’re LGBT Foundation, a health and wellbeing charity. We celebrate, support and empower LGBTQ+ people, so together we can realise our full potential.

Story

Please note: We are undertaking the walk to raise money for Prossy and Leah, not for the Lesbian and Gay Foundation (LGF). The LGF are kindly lending logistical support by collecting funds on our behalf.

Help our friend Prossy Kakooza to be reunited with her partner Leah. Prossy is a Ugandan lesbian refugee who fled persecution in her home country, where homosexuality is illegal and carries a sentence of life imprisonment.

In Uganda, Prossy and Leah kept their relationship secret for 4 years, but on one fateful day, they were caught together and marched naked through the town to the police station, imprisoned and horrifically assaulted by the authorities. Prossy miraculously escaped from prison after being held for 3 days in 2007, and after a long battle was granted refugee status in the UK in October 2008.

Prossy last saw Leah on 25th July 2007 and she has worked relentlessly day and night to help her, by bribing prison guards to let her out – her only option, given that there is no legal alternative. Costing thousands of pounds each time, this was at last successful on the 4th attempt, and after 4 years in prison Leah got out in August 2011.

Leah is currently in hiding in Uganda, and Prossy is continuing to work as hard as she can to raise legal fees to bring her to the UK to live with her, under UK ‘family reunion’ asylum law. Prossy is using her own earnings and has borrowed money to keep Leah in hiding, which means that she cannot simultaneously save up for the substantial legal fees and is at a point where she cannot do much more financially.

Please help us to support Prossy to end this injustice! On Saturday 11th August 2012 we are walking 25 miles from Heathrow Airport to the Asylum Screening Unit in East Croydon where Prossy claimed asylum, retracing her first journey in the UK after her escape.

Thank you! Anna, Lauren, Jacob and Erica x
