Suicide is a word that evokes discomfort, guilt and shame. This is a problem because the less we talk about it and the more we skirt around the subject, the more those experiencing suicidal thoughts are likely to feel isolated and shame and fear in asking for help.
I am raising money for Campaign Against Living Miserably, a charity focussing on men's mental health by running the 2018 Bath Half Marathon.
I strongly believe that honesty, vulnerability and openness makes the world go around. Unfortunately, from a very young age society teaches men to bottle their emotions and to portray an image of "masculinity" that is undeniably harmful; that displaying emotions and vulnerability somehow makes you 'less of a man'. This is wrong.
My brother never asked for help. I strongly believe that if we lived in a society where opening up, displaying vulnerability and asking for help was seen as something strong and brave to do, people like my brother, who quietly made his own decision to leave this physical realm, would feel less shame and guilt in doing so.
I know that I can't change the world, but I can create a miniscule ripple amongst my own community.
