Ronald McDonald House Charities UK is an independent charity providing free 'home away from home’ accommodation for families with children in hospital. Thanks to the fundraising, donations and volunteering of supporters, we have helped nearly 50,000 families in our 30 year history.

Story

Our very own little Rapunzel is having a haircut to raise money for a place very close to all our families' heart!

Anna recently heard of a little girl getting her hair cut and donating it to the Little Princess Trust to make wigs for people who needed them. She suggested that she could do this too and that got us thinking that we could combine her donating some hair and raising some money for Ronald McDonald House, Oxford.

Ronald McDonald House, Oxford is a very special place for our family. Anna was born with a rare metabolic bone condition, called hypophosphatasia, which affects the mineralisation of bone. The condition also led to Anna developing craniosynastosis. In August 2012, when Anna was 6 months old, we went for an outpatient appointment in John Radcliffe Hospital and were told that the pressure in her brain was dangerously high and that she required surgery within a couple of days. Our world was thrown into turmoil, we had only planned a 2 day visit, but with Ronald McDonald House, Oxford looking after us, we had no need to worry. We benefitted from their amazing facilities, like an ensuite bedroom, communal kitchen and a chance to meet other families in a similar situation, for almost a month and without them we would have been lost.

We have been over for many reviews over the last 5 years and Anna considers staying at Ronald McDonald House an exciting trip to look forward to.

We stayed again for another month in June 2015 when Anna required further craniofacial surgery and it is literally a home away from home. We had our second daughter, Ella with us during this time and it was brilliant having somewhere where the girls could interact and play together, away from the busy ward. It would have been impossible to continue with normal family life without the house.

So, Anna plans to get around 10 inches cut off her long blonde locks at the beginning of June (date to be confirmed) and we would really appreciate if you could consider donating to this wonderful place. It is truly a haven, allowing families as much normality as is possible during a stressful and tiring time. The staff are wonderful and no matter how busy they are, they make time to stop and talk and take a genuine interest in how your little one is doing and how the rest of the family are coping with what is going on.

This house has helped us and many other families from round the UK, including lots from Northern Ireland, who like us travel to the specialist craniofacial unit. Please give what you can to support this worthwhile cause.
