This page was originally set up by Anne herself when she first got the idea into her head that she wanted to make all her friends and family abseil down the spinnaker tower, the tallest building outside of London!! 

Her inspiration for doing so was to raise money for a medical research charity which extended her life- CIIC. After being diagnose with terminal bowel cancer and undergoing intense chemotherapy that failed to work, Anne took part in a pioneering drugs trial developed through the money raised by CIIC. 

The cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy Centre (CIIC) brings Scientists and Clinicians together to carry out world class research, focused on harnessing the incredible power of the immune system to target cancer. Anne personally experienced chemotherapy and Immunotherapy. She was convinced that Immunology and Immunotherapy are the way forward in beating very many types of cancers without having to attack the whole body’s immune system, as chemotherapy does. The benefits of Immunotherapy are already breaking barriers in cancer research that were once thought impossible.

Anne benefitted initially from the clinical trial treating her rare and aggressive form of bowel cancer with immunotherapy. She saw an 80% reduction in her cancer mass within the first month. Unfortunately, new nodes became present after 14 weeks which meant she was unable to continue with the trial. However, during her treatment she was far more active and able to pursue a near normal lifestyle – even completing a 30 mile bike ride! This was something she would never have been able to do on chemotherapy.

Immunotherapy research is making new break throughs every week. With the help of research like that done by CIIC at the University of Birmingham we are even closer to beating this horrible disease that takes special people, like Anne, too soon. 

Anne's friends and family will most likely be cursing Anne as they make their descent down the spinnaker tower but their belief in the cause and the knowledge that Anne will be smiling down on all of them as they complete her challenge will help them through!
